Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is the sodium salt of hypochlorous acid. Dissolved in water, it has a yellow-green, translucent color with a high pH. It is characterized by a strong oxidizing effect. It is obtained by saturating sodium hydroxide solution and alkali metals with chlorine.

One of the basic applications of sodium hypochlorite is the treatment and disinfection of drinking and process water. As a biocidal substance that removes both pathogenic microorganisms - including E. Coli bacteria - and fungi. Thanks to these properties, it is widely used in waterworks and in companies dealing with the supply of drinking water or having technological contact with food. It has a bactericidal and fungicidal effect.

Sodium hypochlorite is commonly used to treat water in swimming pools and water parks. It is used both in small household tanks with a capacity of several cubic meters, as well as in hotel and SPA installations, as well as sports swimming pools and amusement parks that use hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of water daily. The recommended concentration for effective disinfection of swimming pool water is 200-250 ml of a 15% sodium hypochlorite solution for every 10,000 liters of water - at a water pH of 7.0 and a temperature in the range of 18-22 degrees Celsius. Also used as a component in water treatment plants based on chlorine dioxide.

Sodium hypochlorite, due to its biocidal properties, is commonly used in poultry farming and other farm animals as a universal disinfectant. In the form of a three percent aqueous solution, sodium hypochlorite is an ideal agent for disinfecting the breeding surface of poultry, pigs, cattle, horses and cattle. This agent can be used on the surface as well as in the form of mist or spray. The efficiency of the agent is estimated at about 300 liters of working liquid per breeding facility, e.g. a chicken coop with an area of 1750 to 2000 square meters.

Sodium hypochlorite, due to its biocidal properties, is commonly used in Western Europe as a universal fungicide in fruit tree crops and vineyards. Spring preventive spraying of fruit trees in the leafless state with a 3% aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite - with a yield of approx. 500 l per hectare of spray liquid - is a recommended, common and planned treatment in orchards and vineyards in the Netherlands, France and Germany. In publications of such authorities as Peter van Arkel, autumn spraying with a three percent water solution of sodium hypochlorite - with a capacity of approx. 500 l of working liquid per hectare - is mentioned as very effective or highly effective in preventing and combating fruit tree cancer, especially Neonectria ditissima - known also known as Nectri galligena and Neonectria.

Sodium hypochlorite, thanks to its strong disinfecting and bleaching properties, is widely used in household chemistry products such as: toilet gels, disinfectants, fabric bleaches.

Sodium hypochlorite as a highly reactive oxidant with bleaching and biocidal properties is widely used in the wood industry as a preventive measure and to combat blue stain of wood. Spraying or bathing in a 6-8% aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite is commonly used to prevent blue stain or remove discoloration.

Attention! Sodium hypochlorite is a dangerous substance, use appropriate personal protective equipment when using it.
