Potassium iodate is an inorganic chemical compound, the potassium salt of iodic acid. It is a white substance with a crystalline structure of white color. Potassium iodate is moderately soluble in water (47g/l). One way to obtain this chemical compound is the reaction of iodine with a hot, concentrated solution of potassium hydroxide. Potassium iodate is a raw material that is used in the chemical, food and pharmaceutical industries.
Application of Potassium Iodate:
- In the food industry, it is used by salt producers to enrich it with iodine, thanks to which potential buyers can supplement iodine deficiencies in the body. Iodine deficiency is a dangerous symptom, especially during pregnancy in a woman, because the lack of it can cause disorders in the development of the fetus and numerous diseases of the child,
- in medicine, used in therapy after irradiation with radioactive iodine in order to remove it from the thyroid gland,
- in the chemical industry, thanks to its properties, it is often used as an oxidant.
