Pharmaceutical Grade Sodium Hydroxide (Ph. Eur.); Caustic soda

Sodium hydroxide of pharmaceutical quality, declared by the manufacturer. An indispensable intermediate in the production of a wide range of pharmaceutical products. First of all, it is used in the production of anti-influenza drugs as a sodium carrier, e.g. in the production of polopyrin.

Used in the production of salicylic acid and sulfonamides. Sodium hydroxide is used in the production of sodium ascorbate - an alternative to vitamin C, the sodium salt of ascorbic acid. Obtained by neutralizing ascorbic acid with sodium hydroxide.

Caustic soda in pharmaceutical quality is also necessary in the production of iodoform. It is obtained from acetone or ethyl alcohol treated with iodine dissolved in sodium hydroxide as a result of the so-called iodoform reaction.

Pharmaceutical sodium hydroxide is used as an auxiliary substance in the production of medicinal ointments and creams for external use. Caustic soda in the form of an aqueous solution is used to neutralize carboxyl groups, and thus to cross-link spatially gelling substances, e.g. polyacrylic acids in therapeutic gels. This increases the pharmaceutical availability of active ingredients in hydrogel preparations.
